Migrating to a new VPS does not have to mean downtime. With a little planning you can move your application with seconds of interruption at most.
1. Snapshot and back up
Before touching anything, take a full backup of your database and files. This is your safety net — if anything goes wrong, you can roll back.
2. Provision the new box
Spin up the new VPS with the same OS and runtime versions as your current one. Matching versions avoids the most common migration surprises.
3. Replicate the environment
Install the same dependencies, configure the same environment variables, and deploy the same code. Test it against a staging URL before pointing real traffic at it.
4. Sync the data
Copy your database and files over. For large databases, do an initial full copy, then a final incremental sync right before the cutover to minimise the window.
5. Flip the DNS
Point your domain at the new server. Keep the TTL low beforehand so the change propagates quickly. Monitor both boxes during the transition.
6. Verify and clean up
Confirm everything works end to end, then decommission the old box. Keep its backup for a week just in case.
